AS Watson develops AI-powered skincare solution with L’Oréal
AS Watson, the health and beauty giant that owns Superdrug, has announced the launch of “Skinfie Lab”, a skin analysis tool that creates personalized product recommendations based on customers’ selfies.
Skinfie Lab is first launching at Watsons Hong Kong and will roll out to Thailand, Taiwan, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia by early 2023.
The launch of Skinfie Lab in Asia is AS Watson’s latest development to deliver a true O+O (Offline plus Online) customer experience. It builds on the launch of an AI-powered skincare advisor at Superdrug last year, which doubled conversion rates.

Using artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze customers’ skin and create a tailored skincare regimen for them, Skinfie Lab was jointly developed by AS Watson and ModiFace, L’Oréal’s AI and AR company. It was created with dermatologists and based on 15 years of research. The AI-powered Skinfie Lab was built and validated using over 16,000 selfie images and capable of detecting a range of facial attributes from a customer’s selfie, including acne, fine lines, pigmentation, large pores, wrinkles, radiance, skin firmness and overall skin condition.
Customers can take a selfie and answer a few cell phone questions about themselves. Skinfie Lab then generates a personalized, in-depth skin analysis and a bespoke list of product recommendations from all the products available in Watsons eStore. The skincare routine she covers includes cleansers, face masks, toner, serum, eye cream, moisturizer, and sunscreen.

Skinfie Lab can help beauty newbies looking for guidance in developing their own skincare regimen, as well as beauty enthusiasts looking for highly personalized recommendations based on the latest trends and products.
