An engineer builds a robot to perfectly insert and remove contact lenses from your eyes
When it comes to dealing with poor vision, you have a handful of options – either glasses, LASIK or contact lenses. The last, many find it very uncomfortable. Sticking your fingers into the eyeball to remove a layer of it, the whole process is tedious and, in my opinion, downright horrifying.
However, now an engineer has made a device that does this dirty work for us. He built a robot that carefully inserts and removes eye contact lenses, in a few seconds. The robot is called ‘Claira’, which is short for ‘Contact Lens Inserter and Remover’.
Reported First by CNN, Cliara creator Craig Hershoff was diagnosed with Fuch’s dystrophy in the year 2000 and has suffered from poor eyesight ever since. He even underwent three surgeries for corneal transplants in just 10 years, but the problem persisted.
Later, he discovered a new treatment where a special contact lens called scleral lenses could help him regain his vision. His wife helped him put in the contact lenses. However, after his death he found it very difficult to replace the lenses as his hands were shaking a lot. That’s what made him create this device.
The device is equipped with a camera and right next to it is a small screen that can help you see where you place the eyeball. The robotic arm has sensitive force sensors that detect contact with the lens and know when to stop moving forward.
It has a small suction cup that attaches to the lens and removes it. The same cup is also useful for reinserting the lens.
Cliara is specially designed for people with neurological conditions that cause their hands to shake and shake.. Alternatively, people who are sensitive to people touching the eyes can also benefit from Cliara. The machine is currently awaiting FDA approval to be available to everyone.
